THE STOP MODEL

We are faced with many decisions every day, some difficult and some easy. Using this simple tool could be the difference between being involved in an incident or not.

In order to make a good decision, STOP what you are doing long enough to prepare for the actions that will take place.

Anticipate and understand the changes around you as possible cues signaling danger. STOP or slow the activity enough to identify and address anything that could affect the safety of self and others.

Take time to THINK about what you are about to do.

Assess the (possible) threat. THINK through how your actions could affect the risk, and how adapting your actions could help mitigate the risk.

After you have thought through the goals, risks, and rewards of the task, consider your OPTIONS.

After examining your OPTIONS and their probably outcomes, develop a plan to perform your task safely.

Give yourself the POWER to make the right decision. Communicate any concerns with your supervisor and discuss alternatives.

You have the POWER to use sound judgement to reduce or eliminate risks for yourself and others.
